Mount Vernon

We traveled a short distance on Monday and arrived early morning at Mt. Vernon so we would have most of the day to explore the area.  It did not disappoint.  We were so impressed by the well laid out tour grounds, which included several movies, museums, gift shops, gardens,  restaurants, as well as the tour of the main estate.  We spent much of the early morning touring the beautiful gardens before we entered the lovely estate.  How amazing it was to walk through rooms that George Washington himself had been in.  It was so interesting to hear about George and Martha's romance and life as well as his military career and family life.  We walked down to the lower plantation garden, burial area, as well as barn and slave cabin.  We were thankful to have a shuttle to take us back up the hill.  In the Mount Vernon Inn we were served a delicious lunch and then we were on the way to George's Grist Mill and Distillery for another tour.  Both were very interesting...of course we had to purchase corn meal that was milled right there.   Sounds like corn bread when we get home.  Again we were back in the car for the drive to Williamsburg where we would stay for 3 nights.
